School Tours Have Begun!
On September 5, seniors from the Chinquapin School had the wonderful opportunity to tour FotoFest's exhibition Mechanical Perception: New Photographic Work by Mei-Mei Dillard, Eileen Maxson, Brian Piana, Soody Sharifi, and Anderson Wrangle. On hand to guide students through the exhibition and answer questions were artists Brian Piana, Anderson Wrangle, Soody Sharifi, and Mei-Mei Dillard and curators Ariane Roesch, Toby Kamps, and Stephan Hillerbrand.
Susan Davis's 12th-grade AP English class, who have been introduced to the media literacy elements of the Literacy Through Photography curriculum in their classroom, found the experience to be extremely fascinating. In fact, they were so interested in the artwork, they all wanted T-shirts with artist Brian Piana's work on them. Soody Sharifi’s installation dealing with Islamic culture, Outside/In, was another favorite with comments from the students such as “it brought photography to life” and that it “opens your eyes to different cultures.”
Accompanying Susan Davis, second-year LTP teacher, and her students was English teacher Carl Abramowitz, who is one of three Chinquapin teachers who will be using Literacy Through Photography in their classrooms.
For over 35 years the Chinquapin School has provided economically disadvantaged but academically promising youths from the Houston area with the opportunity for a better future through a college preparatory education.
