A Huge Turnout for FotoFence 2008
More than 300 students, teachers, parents and school officials celebrated Mother’s Day and Literacy Through Photography (LTP) at FotoFest on Sunday, May 11, 2008.
Four hundred LTP student photo and writing posters, three dimensional works and videos lined the gallery walls. Sixteen schools participated in FotoFence 2008 along with the
Transition Medicine Program from Baylor College of Medicine and participants in the annual Houston Press High School Photography contest. Much applause greeted the readings
by five students from LTP classrooms and an account of living with chronic illness by a participant in the Baylor program.
Houston Press officials presented a $1000 scholarship to the overall winner of newspaper’s High School Photo Contest. Among the photographers at FotoFence 2008 was Louis Rodriquez from Furr High School.
The FotoFence 2008 exhibit will be on view at FotoFest headquarters gallery at 1113 Vine Street through Tuesday May 22, 2008.

Literacy Through Photography Breaks the Language Barrier
Nadine Ellaham had a hard time starting school in America. Two years ago, fresh from Lebanon, she came to Fort Bend County’s Velasquez Elementary School speaking no English. The barrier caused her to repeat 2nd grade, a setback Nadine seemed determined to overcome.

FOTOFEST2008-CHINA Hosts School Tours
Every two years, FotoFest holds its citywide international Biennial of photo-based art and ideas, including six weeks of events and exhibitions in March-April. This year’s FOTOFEST2008 Biennial,focused on China 1934-2008, with photographic work from 34 artists from China, some of whose work showed for the first time outside of China.

Literacy Through Photography Works with Chronically Sick at Baylor College of Medicine
In partnership with Baylor College of Medicine's Transitional Medicine Clinic, FotoFest's Literacy Through Photography© (LTP) program expanded its reach in September from the traditional K-12 classroom setting to a group of young adults with chronic illnesses under Baylor’s care. Two young men and two young women participated in the program this year, meeting once a month and communicating between lessons via internet.
